MFA Press Statement: Meeting between Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Premier of The People’s Republic of China Wen Jiabao On 14 September 2011

Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong called on Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summer Davos in Dalian, China, this evening.

ESM Goh and Premier Wen reaffirmed the excellent state of relations between Singapore and China. They noted the good progress of the many bilateral co-operative projects between the two countries, starting with the Suzhou Industrial Park and the extensive cooperation in human resource development.

Premier Wen made specific mention of the two key bilateral projects that he and ESM initiated, namely the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City and financial cooperation. Premier Wen and ESM noted the good progress of both projects since their last meeting in April 2011.

They also agreed on the need to explore new areas of cooperation to further deepen bilateral relations. One such area is sustainable development, given that both countries face similar challenges in promoting development in the face of environmental and resource constraints.

ESM and Premier Wen exchanged views on developments in Northeast Asia. They agreed on the importance of maintaining a stable and secure regional environment as a critical component for sustained economic growth.
