Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam met with Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Baconschi at the sidelines of the 66th United Nations General Assembly in New York on 21 September 2011.
Noting the conclusion of the latest hearing in the trial against former Romanian diplomat Dr Silviu Ionescu in Bucharest on 21 September 2011, Minister Shanmugam stressed that the case had created a lot of interest and unhappiness in Singapore. He added that the Singapore Government took the case seriously. Minister Baconschi expressed understanding for the emotions arising from the hit-and-run incident and its impact on public opinion in Singapore and assured Minister Shanmugam that Romania had been transparent and honest in dealing with the case. Minister Shanmugam expressed appreciation for the Romanian Government's attention to the case.
