Press Statement by the Global Governance Group (3G) on the Fourth 3G Ministerial Meeting in New York on 26 September 2011

The Global Governance Group (3G) [1] held its Fourth Ministerial Meeting in New York on 26 September 2011, on the sidelines of the 66th United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The 3G Ministers welcomed Finland as the latest member to join the group. Building on its efforts to promote dialogue and cooperation among key actors in global governance, the 3G invited the President of the 66th UN General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, as well as the past, present and upcoming Chairs of the G-20 - the Republic of Korea, France and Mexico - to join in the meeting.

The Ministers welcomed the discussions on global governance that have taken place at the UN over the past year, and looked forward to the continuation of such discussions through the 66th session of the General Assembly. They expressed concern about the persistent weakness of the global economy and the fragility of its recovery, and stressed the urgent need for sound global governance to restore growth and create jobs. They called for sustained efforts by key actors, including the G-20, to improve the coordination and implementation of economic and financial policies. The Ministers also called for the rejection of protectionist measures and the promotion of free trade, which is a vital engine of global growth. They urged the G-20 to help expedite the conclusion of an ambitious and balanced Doha Development Agenda.

The Ministers reviewed the work of the 3G in promoting a more effective and accountable framework of global governance, and discussed the 3G's way forward. They took stock of the 3G's efforts to promote a more inclusive and transparent G-20 process, and stronger cooperation between the UN and the G-20. They welcomed the increasing interaction between the UN and the G-20 under the previous and current G-20 Chairs, and looked forward to the continuation of such useful interactions. The Ministers had a fruitful exchange of views on the agenda of the forthcoming G-20 Summit in Cannes, and agreed for the 3G to provide inputs to the UK's report to the G-20 on global governance.
