MFA Spokesman's Comments in response to media queries on the situation concerning the 25 Singaporeans on a football training programme in Italy

In response to media queries on the situation in Libya, the MFA Spokesman said:

The civil conflict in Libya is entering a new phase with the Libyan National Transitional Council (LNTC) having secured most of the country including Tripoli. The issues ahead will be legion and more challenging, not least of which will be uniting the various forces so that violence will cease and national reconciliation can be achieved quickly.

Singapore fully supports the statement by Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, in his capacity as the present Chairman of ASEAN on 4 September 2011 where he emphasised that ASEAN Member States "support the on-going efforts involving the National Transitional Council to promote reconciliation and build a democratic and stable Libya in accordance with the aspirations and wishes of the Libyan people."
