Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law Mr K Shanmugam attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting from 10 to 11 November 2011, co-chaired by US Secretary of State Mrs Hillary Clinton and US Trade Representative Ambassador Ron Kirk. The Foreign Ministers' segment of the APEC Ministerial Meeting discussed APEC's key contribution towards peace and stability in the region through promoting trade and economic integration. They also had a good discussion on promoting disaster relief cooperation and how to enhance regional economies' resilience following a disaster. Ministers also shared experiences on how to promote economic growth through open governance.
On the sidelines of the APEC Ministerial Meeting, Minister Shanmugam took the opportunity to meet his counterparts from Chile, Peru, Russia and Mexico, where they discussed bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the outlook for the global economy. With his Peruvian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Relations Mr Rafael Roncagliolo, Minister Shanmugam also signed an Agreement on the Establishment of a Consultation Mechanism between the Two Foreign Ministries.
