MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Singapore’s Plenipotentiary Representative to the Caribbean Community

The Government has appointed Mr Kemal Siddique as Singapore's first Plenipotentiary Representative to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). He will be resident in Singapore.

Mr Siddique is the Executive Director of Tony K Siddique & Associates Pte Ltd. He is currently Singapore's Non-Resident Ambassador to Denmark and Special Envoy of Asia-Middle East Dialogue for Economic/Business Issues. He is also a Special Envoy to Ukraine.

Mr Siddique joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 1970. He served as Counsellor at the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta from 1971 to 1973 and Charge d'Affaires ad interim at the Singapore Embassy in Bonn from 1973 to 1978. He was also Deputy Director for Western Europe and North America from 1978 to 1982 and Director for Southeast Asia from 1982 to 1984. He was appointed as a member of the International Business Development Panel in the Economic Development Board from 1993 to 1996.

Mr Siddique served as Ambassador to the former Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics from 1984 to 1986 and as Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 1986 to 1993. He served as Ambassador-at-Large from 1993 to 1996. He retired from the civil service in 1996 and moved to the private sector.

Prior to his current appointment as Non-Resident Ambassador to Denmark, Mr Siddique served as Singapore's Non-Resident Ambassador to Norway from 1993 to 2000, Sweden from 1993 to 2003 and Finland from 1997 to 2000.

Mr Siddique was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) and the Public Service Star by the Singapore Government. The German Government conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit for his contribution in promoting Singapore-German Relations.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Kemal Siddique is the Executive Director of Tony K Siddique & Associates Pte Ltd. Currently, he holds the appointment of Singapore's Non-Resident Ambassador to Denmark (since January 1994) and Special Envoy to Asia-Middle East Dialogue for Economic/Business Issues (since July 2006). He is also a Special Envoy to Ukraine (since February 2011).

Mr Siddique joined the civil and diplomatic service in 1970. He has held a number of diplomatic assignments, and was Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and to the then Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. He was also concurrently Ambassador to Finland, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, German Democratic Republic, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Greece. He has attended ASEAN and international conferences, including five sessions of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Siddique has held senior appointments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Singapore Economic Development Board.
