Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam called on Myanmar President U Thein Sein, Upper House Speaker U Khin Aung Myint, and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin in Nay Pyi Taw today.


During his meetings with Myanmar leaders, Minister Shanmugam reaffirmed the warm and long-standing ties between Singapore and Myanmar. President Thein Sein briefed Minister Shanmugam on recent developments in Myanmar, his development priorities, and expressed his government's appreciation for Singapore's technical assistance and post-Cyclone Nargis humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. Minister Shanmugam and Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including new areas where Singapore could share its developmental experience. Both Foreign Ministers also pledged to continue to work closely together within ASEAN and other multilateral fora.


Minister Shanmugam also met with Union Attorney General Dr Tun Shin and Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) Secretary-General U Htay Oo.


Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin hosted a dinner for Minister Shanmugam and his delegation this evening.
