His Excellency Joachim Gauck
Federal President
Federal Republic of Germany

Excellency,

It gives me great pleasure to extend to you my warmest congratulations on your election as President of the Federal Republic of Germany.  The clear election result attests to the wide support you enjoy in Germany.

Relations between our two countries and peoples are founded upon common interests and shared perspectives.  Our bilateral collaboration extends across a broad spectrum of activities, ranging from trade and investment, defence, education, scientific research and technical innovation.  The links are both active and well-institutionalised.  The official visit of Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel to Singapore in June 2011 injected further impetus into our bilateral cooperation.  In the economic sphere, the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, which is presently being negotiated, will bring significant benefits to the businesses of our two countries.

Singapore and Germany also work well together to bring Asia and Europe closer together in the context of inter-regional forums such as the Asia-Europe Meeting and the ASEAN-Europe Dialogue Partnership.

Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
