MFA Press Statement: Official Visit of First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

The First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom (UK) Rt Hon William Hague MP, who is in Singapore for an official visit, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Transport Mr Lui Tuck Yew today. Minister Lui also hosted an official lunch in honour of Mr Hague.


During the call on Prime Minister Lee, both leaders reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the increasing high-level exchanges between Singapore and the UK. They exchanged views on developments in Asia and other international issues. Prime Minister Lee welcomed the UK’s strong support for the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA), which would deepen the economic linkages between Singapore and the EU.


Minister Lui and Mr Hague had a wide-ranging discussion on regional developments in Asia and Europe and other international developments. Minister Lui welcomed the UK’s intent to reinvigorate its relationship with Asia. The two leaders agreed to explore ways to further strengthen bilateral ties in areas of mutual interest, such as economics, trade liberalisation and education.
