MFA Press Statement: State Visit of President Tony Tan Keng Yam to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 23 to 27 April 2012

President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who is in Vietnam on a
State Visit, called on Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang this
afternoon after the Ceremonial Welcome at the Presidential Palace in
Hanoi. During the meeting, both Presidents affirmed the comprehensive
and growing bilateral ties which are characterised by frequent
exchanges between the governments, businesses and peoples from the two
countries. They also explored ways to expand cooperation in a variety
of areas including trade and investment, education, urban solutions,
and cooperation in regional and multilateral forums.


Following the meeting, President Tony Tan and
President Sang witnessed an investment license presentation to
Sembcorp’s joint venture, the VSIP JV Co Ltd, to develop the fifth
Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park and an in-principle approval
document presentation to Sembcorp to develop the Dung Quat thermal
power plant in Quang Ngai province.


President Tony Tan also met with Vietnam Prime
Minister Nguyen Tan Dung today. Both leaders exchanged views on
regional and international developments, and emphasised the two
countries’ commitment to establish an ASEAN Economic Community by
2015. They also reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties and agreed to
step up cooperation under the Connectivity Framework Agreement to
further enhance bilateral trade and investment relations.


President Tony Tan and Mrs Tan will be hosted to a
State Banquet by President Sang and his wife, Madam Mai Thi Hanh this
evening. President Tony Tan will also meet with Communist Party of
Vietnam General-Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong tomorrow morning before
departing for Ho Chi Minh City.
