MFA Press Statement: Introductory Visit by the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar HE U Wunna Maung Lwin, 13-15 May 2012

Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar His Excellency U Wunna Maung Lwin, who is in Singapore for his introductory visit, called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong this morning. PM Lee and Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin noted the excellent relations between Singapore and Myanmar, and expressed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties. Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin updated PM Lee on recent developments in Myanmar and expressed appreciation for Singapore’s support towards Myanmar’s reforms. PM Lee reaffirmed Singapore's support for the positive changes in Myanmar and the Myanmar government’s capacity-building efforts.

Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin also called on, and was hosted to lunch by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam today. Both Ministers welcomed the progress made in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on the Singapore-Myanmar Technical Cooperation Programme which they signed during the State Visit by Myanmar President U Thein Sein to Singapore in January 2012. Minister Shanmugam reiterated Singapore’s readiness to assist Myanmar in its preparations for the 2014 ASEAN Chairmanship. They also exchanged views on how the bilateral relationship could be further enhanced.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong received a call by Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin yesterday. They discussed recent developments in Myanmar and ways to strengthen bilateral ties.

Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin departs Singapore this evening.
