MFA Press Statement: Appointment Of Singapore’s Non-Resident Ambassador to Denmark (30 May 2012)

The Government has appointed Mr A Selverajah as Singapore’s next Ambassador to Denmark. He will be resident in Singapore.

Mr Selverajah has a distinguished career in the Singapore Foreign Service since he joined in July 1979. Prior to his recent appointment as Dean of the MFA Diplomatic Academy, he was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines from 2008 to 2012. He also previously served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 2003 to 2008, with concurrent accreditation as Ambassador to Greece from 2004 to 2006, and as Singapore’s Ambassador to the European Communities, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the Holy See from 1999 to 2003. He also held the appointment of Director of Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate II (North America and Europe) from 1997 to 1999 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Selverajah was awarded the Public Administration (Silver) Medal in November 2000. He was conferred the decoration of the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Gregory by Pope John Paul II in October 2002, and the Order of Sikatuna with the rank of Datu (Gold Distinction) by Philippine President Benigno S Aquino in February 2012.

Mr Selverajah is married to Mdm S Saandhamma and they have two sons.

Mr A Selverajah is currently the Dean of the MFA Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Selverajah was born on 21 December 1953. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the National University of Singapore and obtained a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University.

Mr Selverajah joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July 1979. He served as First Secretary and later, as Counsellor at the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok from August 1987 to August 1990. From September 1990 to January 1994, he was Deputy Director and later, Director of Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate II (North America and Europe).

Mr Selvarajah was Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Singapore Embassy in Washington from February 1994 to March 1997. Upon his return to Singapore, he held the appointment of Director of Policy, Planning and Analysis Directorate II (North America and Europe) from November 1997 to June 1999. Mr Selverajah served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the European Communities, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the Holy See from September 1999 to July 2003. He was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from August 2003 to July 2008, with concurrent accreditation as Ambassador to Greece from April 2004 to January 2006. Prior to taking up his current appointment as Dean of the MFA Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Selverajah was Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines from August 2008 to March 2012.
