MFA Press Statement: Appointments of Singapore’s Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia and Singapore’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam (31 May 2012)

The Government has appointed Mr Anil Kumar Nayar as Singapore’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia and Mr Jaya Ratnam as Singapore’s next High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam. Both Mr Nayar and Mr Ratnam will assume post on 18 June 2012.


Mr Nayar joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June 1993. His first overseas posting was at the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta from 1995-2000. On his return to the headquarters, he worked in the Southeast Asia Directorate, and held the appointment of Director/Southeast Asia prior to his most recent appointment as Singapore’s Ambassador to Belgium with concurrent accreditation to the European Communities, the Netherlands and Luxembourg from November 2006 to April 2012. He also served as Singapore’s Special Envoy to Romania from April 2010 to April 2012.

Mr Nayar graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours II Upper) in 1993 from the National University of Singapore. He obtained a Master of Arts in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, United States in 2001.

In 2005, Mr Nayar was awarded the Public Administration Award (Silver) by the Singapore Government. In 2008, he was awarded the Public Administration Award (Gold) in recognition of his work as the Co-Agent for Singapore’s case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Pedra Branca.
He is married to Ms Chan Peck See.

Mr Ratnam joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. He served in various capacities in the Europe, Southeast Asia, International Organisations and International Economics Directorates. He has also served at the Singapore Missions in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and to the United Nations (Geneva). He held the appointment of Director/International Economics prior to his most recent appointment as Director-General of the Consular Directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from January 2011 to May 2012.

Mr Ratnam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours II Upper) in 1991 from the National University of Singapore. He obtained a Master in International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, United States in 2000.

Mr Ratnam is married to Mrs Sujatha Ratnam and they have three children.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
MR ANIL KUMAR NAYAR


Mr Anil Kumar Nayar was born on 22 August 1968. He graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours II Upper) in 1993 from the National University of Singapore. He obtained a Master of Arts in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, United States in 2001.

Mr Nayar joined the Foreign Service in June 1993, where he held the posts of Country Officer/North America from 1993 to 1994 and Country Officer/Indonesia from 1994 to 1995. His first overseas posting was to the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia as First Secretary from 1995 to 2000. On his return to Headquarters, he was assigned to the Southeast Asia Directorate where he held the appointments of Senior Assistant Director/Indonesia (2000), Deputy Director/Malaysia and Brunei and other Southeast Asia (2001 to 2002), Senior Deputy Director (2003 to 2004) and Director (2004 to 2006).

In 2005, Mr Nayar was awarded the Public Administration Award (Silver) by the Singapore Government. In 2008, he was awarded the Public Administration Award (Gold) in recognition of his work as the Co-Agent for Singapore’s case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Pedra Branca.

Mr Nayar’s most recent appointment was as Singapore’s Ambassador to Belgium with concurrent accreditation to the European Communities, the Netherlands and Luxembourg from November 2006 to April 2012. He also served as Singapore’s Special Envoy to Romania from April 2010 to April 2012.

Mr Nayar is fluent in English, Tamil and Bahasa Indonesia, and conversant in French.

MR JAYA RATNAM

Mr Jaya Ratnam was Director-General of the Consular Directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from January 2011 to May 2012.

Mr Ratnam joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. He served various capacities in the Europe, Southeast Asia, International Organisations and International Economics Directorates. He has also served overseas at the Singapore Missions in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and to the United Nations (Geneva). Prior to his appointment in Consular Directorate, he was serving as Director (International Economics).

Mr Ratnam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours II Upper) from the National University of Singapore in 1991 and obtained a Master in International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, USA in 2000.

Mr Ratnam is married to Mrs Sujatha Ratnam and they have three children.
