MFA Press Statement: Official Visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, 29 May – 1 June 2012

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam will be making an official visit to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka from 29 May to 1 June 2012. It will be Minister Shanmugam’s first visit to Sri Lanka since assuming post as Foreign Minister.

In Colombo, Minister Shanmugam will call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and meet Minister of External Affairs Prof G.L. Peiris and Minister of Justice Rauff Hakeem. He will attend a reception, hosted by newly-appointed Honorary Consul General Mr Jayantha Dharmadasa, to mark the opening of the office of the Consulate General of Singapore in Colombo.

Minister Shanmugam will visit Jaffna in the Northern Province and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province, where he will meet local leaders, and visit the iconic Jaffna Public Library. In 2011, the Singapore International Foundation undertook a project to refurbish the Children’s Section of the Jaffna Library. Supported by the Prima Group, members of the Singapore Sri Lankan community, the National Library Board and the Singapore Cooperation Programme under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project included the training of some Jaffna librarians in Singapore.

In conjunction with Minister Shanmugam’s visit, the Singapore Business Federation is leading a business mission to explore business opportunities in Sri Lanka. The business delegation of some 20 members will visit Galle, Hambantota and Colombo. Minister Shanmugam and Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen will witness the signing of an MOU between the Singapore Business Federation and the Sri Lanka-Singapore Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. The MOU seeks to promote greater trade and economic exchange between Singapore and Sri Lankan companies.

Minister Shanmugam will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
