Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Mr Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is on an official visit to Singapore, called on Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law Mr K Shanmugam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this evening. This was followed by an official dinner hosted by Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Lui Tuck Yew for Minister Rinkēvičs and his delegation.
The leaders affirmed the good bilateral relations and agreed that Singapore and Latvia should, as small countries in an interconnected world, promote greater cultural, education and economic cooperation. They also agreed that the early conclusion of the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement would be to the mutual benefit of the EU and Singapore. The leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments.
Earlier in the day, Mr Rinkēvičs paid a courtesy call on Minister for Trade and Industry Mr Lim Hng Kiang, attended a briefing by the Public Service Division and Civil Service College on public administration in Singapore, and participated in a business networking luncheon hosted by the Singapore Business Federation. Mr Rinkēvičs also delivered a public lecture entitled "Recent Developments in the European Union (EU) and Latvia", at the Asia-Europe Foundation.
