Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Yang Jiechi is making his first official visit to Singapore as Foreign Minister from 28 to 29 May 2012 at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam.

Minister Yang called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean on 28 May 2012. He also met with and was hosted to dinner by Minister Shanmugam. During their meetings with Minister Yang, our leaders reaffirmed the long-standing and excellent bilateral ties between Singapore and China, which are anchored on frequent high-level exchanges, strong economic linkages and close people-to-people ties. Our leaders and Minister Yang also discussed ways to further strengthen and deepen bilateral ties, including in the areas of economic, social and financial cooperation. Minister Yang said that the Chinese leaders looked forward to PM’s visit to China. Both sides also agreed that the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation should be held in the latter half of the year.

The two sides had wide-ranging discussions on international and regional developments. During his meeting with Minister Yang, Minister Shanmugam highlighted China’s role in preserving stability and promoting prosperity in the region. The two Foreign Ministers discussed developments in the South China Sea. Minister Shanmugam said that the situation should be resolved peacefully and expeditiously in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Minister Yang will call on President Tony Tan Keng Yam and meet with Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong on 29 May 2012.
