MFA Press Statement: Second Japan-Singapore Bilateral Maritime Security Dialogue, 11 June 2012

The second Singapore-Japan Maritime Security Dialogue was held in Singapore at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 11 June 2012. The Dialogue was chaired by Senior Specialist Adviser Ambassador Mary Seet-Cheng from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Japanese delegation was led by Ambassador Masafumi Ishii, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Policy Bureau from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Dialogue covered a wide range of issues. Both countries discussed the safety of navigation in vital shipping lanes such as the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, counter-piracy measures in Asia, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP), piracy off the coast of Somalia and bilateral cooperation on maritime security. Both countries also affirmed the importance of safeguarding the right of freedom of navigation in accordance with international laws, including UNCLOS.
