His Excellency Hu Jintao

President

The People’s Republic of China

[Your Excellency,]

On behalf of the people of the Republic of Singapore, please allow me to extend my heartiest congratulations to you and the people of China on the 63rd Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Against the backdrop of a weak global economic outlook, the world is looking to Asia, and especially China, as the engine for growth.  Under Your Excellency’s able leadership over the last decade, China has made tremendous progress as a nation which has brought benefits to both its own people and the international community.  As a major player on the global stage, China is also making important contributions to efforts to address the common challenges facing all nations.

Singapore and China enjoy close, substantive and multi-faceted relations anchored by frequent high-level exchanges, excellent economic cooperation and warm people-to-people ties.  As both our countries embark on new areas of cooperation, I have every confidence that our bilateral relations will scale new heights.

I wish Your Excellency good health and success, as well as peace, prosperity and happiness for China and its people.

[Yours sincerely,]

TONY TAN KENG YAM

Dear [Premier Wen,]

On behalf of the people and Government of Singapore, I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations on the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

China has come a long way since 1949.  It is now the world’s second largest economy, and an important player on the international stage.  China’s achievements over the past ten years have been particularly impressive, for which you have played an instrumental role.  I am confident that China will build on its strong foundations and continue to succeed in the future.

I would like to thank you for your invaluable contributions to Singapore-China relations.  Our bilateral cooperation is substantive, multi-faceted and has kept pace with our changing developmental needs.  I am happy that we are embarking on new areas of cooperation such as social management.  There is also much scope for us to work more closely together on issues of mutual concern in the region and beyond.

I wish you good health and happiness in your future endeavours, and look forward to meeting you again at the East Asia Summit in November.

[Yours sincerely]

Lee Hsien Loong

His Excellency Wen Jiabao
