MFA Press Statement: Official Visit To Singapore By The General Secretary Of The Communist Party Of Vietnam Of The Socialist Republic Of Vietnam His Excellency Nguyen Phu Trong 12-14 September 2012

The General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, His Excellency Nguyen Phu Trong, will make an Official Visit to Singapore from 12 to 14 September 2012, at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.  The visit underscores the strong bilateral relations between Singapore and Vietnam, and reaffirms the close ties between the two countries. 

General Secretary Trong will be officially welcomed by Prime Minister Lee at a ceremony at the Istana on 12 September.  Following the welcome ceremony, Prime Minister Lee will meet with General Secretary Trong and host an Official Dinner in honour of General Secretary Trong.  They will also witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Financial Cooperation; an Agreement on the Study Visit Programme and Executive Education Programme for Senior CPV officials; and the Second Protocol Amending the Agreement between Singapore and Vietnam for the Avoidance of Double Taxation. On 13 September 2012, President Tony Tan will meet General Secretary Trong and host him to lunch. 

During his visit, General Secretary Trong will deliver a Public Lecture at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy entitled “For a Southeast Asia of Peace, Stability, Cooperation, and Development”. He will also visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens where an orchid, Spathoglottis Truong Lam, will be named in his honour.  In addition, General Secretary Trong will visit the Economic Development Board, Fusionopolis, Marina Barrage, and Gardens by the Bay.

General Secretary Trong will be accompanied by Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, Chairman of the CPV Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan, Chairman of the CPV Central Office Tran Quoc Vuong, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, Minister of Trade and Industry Vu Huy Hoang, Minister of Finance Vuong Dinh Hue, and other senior officials.
