MFA Press Statement: Official Visit by Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar His Excellency Thura U Shwe Mann 23-26 September 2012

His Excellency Thura U Shwe Mann, Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament (Pyithu Hluttaw) of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, is in Singapore on an Official Visit at the invitation of Speaker of Parliament Mr Michael Palmer. As part of his visit, Thura U Shwe Mann called on Acting President J Y Pillay and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong this afternoon, and met with Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong yesterday.

During these meetings, Thura U Shwe Mann reaffirmed the positive bilateral relations between Singapore and Myanmar, and expressed appreciation for Singapore’s consistent support of Myanmar in its reforms and economic development. Thura U Shwe Mann also provided Acting President, PM and ESM with updates on developments in Myanmar, in particular the role of the Union Parliament in Myanmar’s reform process; and the progress on Myanmar’s Foreign Investment Law. Our leaders welcomed the positive changes in Myanmar, and emphasised the importance of the upcoming passage of the Foreign Investment Law, whose proper implementation would be critical for attracting foreign investors into Myanmar. Our leaders also offered to continue sharing Singapore’s experiences in areas which Myanmar might find useful in its development.

Thura U Shwe Mann was hosted to dinner by Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Grace Fu yesterday. He will observe a Meet-the-People Session hosted by Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Mr Hri Kumar Nair this evening.
