11 September 2012

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales KG and Her Royal Highness Catherine, who are in Singapore for an official visit from 11 to 13 September 2012, were officially welcomed by President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the Istana this evening.

Following the ceremony, the Duke and Duchess met separately with President Tan and Mrs Mary Tan, and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mrs Lee Hsien Loong.  Our leaders conveyed their congratulations on the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne, and reaffirmed the excellent and longstanding relations between Singapore and the United Kingdom.  The Duke also exchanged views with President Tan and PM Lee on the Commonwealth, as well as developments in Europe and Singapore.  After the meetings, President Tan and Mrs Tan hosted the Duke and Duchess to a welcome dinner at the Istana in honour of their visit.

Earlier in the day, the Duke and Duchess visited the Singapore Botanic Gardens where an orchid, the Vanda William Catherine, was named in their honour.  Over the next two days, they will also visit Gardens by the Bay, Queenstown HDB estate, the Rainbow Centre at Margaret Drive, Rolls-Royce Seletar Campus and the Kranji War Cemetery and Memorial.  The Duke and Duchess will depart Singapore on 13 September 2012.
