Condolence Letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

9 April 2013

Dear Prime Minister,

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Baroness Thatcher. She was one of Britain’s great leaders. As Prime Minister, Baroness Thatcher vigorously championed economic liberalisation and enacted many market-based reforms that accelerated Britain’s development. Thatcherism soon came to embody the supply-side reforms that swept the global economy in the 1980s.

Baroness Thatcher also led Britain through defining periods in its history, including the Falklands War and the end of the Cold War, and reshaped Britain’s relationships abroad, especially with the United States. Baroness Thatcher was a friend of Singapore’s, and helped to strengthen ties between our two countries during her time in office.

Baroness Thatcher’s determination to make Britain a stronger nation despite the political odds is an inspiration to global leaders. She will long be remembered as an outstanding leader and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with you and the people of Britain during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathies

LEE HSIEN LOONG

Rt Hon David Cameron MP
Prime Minister
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
