MFA Press Statement: State Visit of President Tony Tan Keng Yam to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, 1 to 5 April 2013

President Tony Tan Keng Yam, who is in Myanmar on a State Visit, met with the Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Thura U Shwe Mann in Nay Pyi Taw this morning.  President Tan and Thura U Shwe Mann reaffirmed the strong bilateral links between Singapore and Myanmar.  During the meeting, Thura U Shwe Mann expressed his appreciation for Singapore’s support in the area of technical assistance, and looked forward to greater parliamentary exchanges.

 

Following the meeting with Thura U Shwe Mann, President Tan departed Nay Pyi Taw for Mandalay, where he viewed a paediatric emergency care training programme at the Mandalay Children’s Hospital.  The “Temasek Foundation – KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital Paediatrics Emergency Care Train-the-Trainer Programme for Children Hospitals in Myanmar” is a collaboration with Myanmar’s Ministry of Health to help enhance Myanmar’s healthcare expertise and facilities for children.  President Tan also toured Mandalay Palace, which is a key cultural and historical site in Mandalay.

 

President Tan also met with and was hosted to dinner by Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Ye Myint this evening.  President Tan will depart for Yangon tomorrow.
