MFA Press Statement: Visit by Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, 3 - 7 June 2013

Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong met Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Rule of Law and Peace and Stability Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw today.  They had a wide-ranging discussion on developments in Myanmar.  Daw Aung San Suu Kyi shared her thoughts on Myanmar’s political, economic and social challenges.  ESM explained how Singapore dealt with similar challenges and reiterated Singapore’s commitment to support Myanmar’s development.  ESM and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi agreed that sustained political stability is critical for Myanmar’s future development. 

ESM also met Yangon Region Chief Minister U Myint Swe in Yangon yesterday.  Chief Minister U Myint Swe briefed ESM on the progress Yangon and Myanmar had made since ESM’s last visit to Myanmar in June 2012, and urged more Singapore companies to invest in Myanmar.  He also reiterated the Yangon Region government’s readiness to enhance cooperation with Singapore in capacity-building, in particular to support the establishment of a modest Vocational Training Institute (VTI) in Yangon by Singapore.
