MFA Spokesman's Comments in response to media queries on the situation in Egypt

In response to media queries regarding the situation in Egypt, the MFA Spokesman said:

"The safety of Singaporeans is MFA's highest priority. Over the last six weeks since the disruption of security in Egypt, especially in Cairo, the Singapore Embassy in Cairo has remained in close touch with all e-registered Singaporeans in Egypt. There have been no reports of affected Singaporeans so far. The Embassy has been facilitating the departure of Singaporean students who would like to leave Egypt. 23 Singaporean students returned to Singapore from Egypt yesterday. We expect another 3 batches of students to return to Singapore over the course of this week.

The Singapore Embassy in Cairo has also extended assistance to Singaporeans residing in Egypt in the following ways. First, providing up-to-date information via email and SMS so that they can avoid areas of public disturbances. Second, assisted to temporarily relocate Singaporean students away from Raba'a Al-Adawiyah, where a major sit-in was held, to safer locations. Third, as the security situation took a turn for the worse, the Singapore Embassy officials contacted every registered Singaporean in Egypt on 17 August 2013 to advise them to consider leaving Egypt during this Summer vacation period."
