Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam met with Peruvian Prime Minister Juan Jimenez Mayor today in Lima.  During the meeting, both sides welcomed the increased momentum of high-level exchanges between Singapore and Peru and the good partnership between the two countries both bilaterally and multilaterally.  Both Minister Shanmugam and Prime Minister Juan Jimenez expressed commitment to take steps to increase trade, investment and people-to-people linkages between Singapore and Peru.  In Minister Shanmugam’s meetings with President of the Congress Fredy Otarola and President of the Congressional Commission on Foreign Affairs Martin Belaunde, both sides supported efforts to further deepen ties and welcomed platforms such as the Singapore-Peru Parliamentary Friendship League as a means for fostering greater cooperation and understanding between the two countries.

Minister Shanmugam also delivered remarks on "The Singapore-Peru Partnership: Seizing Opportunities in an Uncertain World" to an audience of Peruvian government officials, diplomatic community, academics, politicians, business representatives and students at a roundtable dialogue organised by the Peruvian Diplomatic Academy.  Minister Shanmugam noted that Asia and Latin America were two of the fastest growing regions in the world, and had to work together to seize the opportunities for mutual benefit.  Minister Shanmugam also highlighted how the formation of the Pacific Alliance and ASEAN's progress towards Economic Community in 2015 will bring about potential synergies for growth which should be tapped.  Singapore could be a partner to Peru in Asia by tapping on Singapore’s role as an economic, financial and transport gateway to the ASEAN and broader Asia region to extend its economic reach.
