His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was received by President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the Welcome Ceremony at the Istana today.  During King Abdullah II’s call on President Tan, both leaders reaffirmed the excellent bilateral relations between Jordan and Singapore which are underpinned by high level exchanges.  President Tan noted that Singapore and Jordan faced similar challenges as countries with small populations and limited natural resources.  There was scope for both sides to share experiences and explore new areas for collaboration.  President Tan later hosted a State Banquet in honour of King Abdullah II at the Istana.  Earlier today, King Abdullah II spoke on business opportunities in Jordan at the Business Roundtable organised by the Singapore Business Federation and visited the Institute of Technical Education College East.

Separately, Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Nasser Judeh called on Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Grace Fu.  Both Ministers noted that Singapore and Jordan have worked well together bilaterally as well as at international fora.  They also had a good discussion on regional developments in the Middle East.  Minister Judeh and Minister Fu signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Human Resource Development under the framework of the Asia-Middle East Dialogue (AMED).  The MOU expands the scope of courses offered at the AMED Regional Vocational Training Centre (RVTC) to include economic development, public administration, sustainable development, trade facilitation and water management.  The RVTC was established by Jordan and Singapore in 2007 to assist in capacity-building for AMED member countries.
