MFA Press Statement: Condolence Messages from Singapore Leaders to Their Foreign Counterparts on the Crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17

    President Tony Tan Keng Yam has written to His Majesty Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV of Malaysia; Governor-General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove; and His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands to convey his condolences over the tragic crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. 

 

    Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written to Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Najib Razak; Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott; and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte to convey his condolences over the crash.  Prime Minister Lee also called Prime Minister Najib and Prime Minister Rutte to extend his deepest sympathies and offer Singapore’s assistance.  The text of the letters is appended.  

 

    At this point, there have still been no reports of Singaporean victims.  MFA remains in close contact with Malaysia Airlines and the relevant airport authorities to ascertain the nationality of the unverified passengers.  Singaporeans who require consular assistance should contact the MFA Duty Office (24-hours) at:

     I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on 17 July 2014.  The loss of innocent lives under such terrible circumstances is a horrible tragedy.  On behalf of the Government and people of Singapore, I offer our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.  Nothing can bring back their loved ones, but I hope they will find the strength and fortitude to overcome their grief over time.
