Dear Mr Juncker,

On behalf of the Government and people of Singapore, I congratulate you on your election as the next President of the European Commission.  Your decisive victory and support from the various European institutions reflect the strong confidence that the EU has in you.

This is an important time for Europe and the EU.  I am confident that, under your leadership, the European Commission will play a key role in sustaining Europe’s economic recovery, improving the institutions of the European Union, and making a difference to the lives of Europeans.

Singapore and the EU enjoy good bilateral relations.  The recently concluded EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement and EU-Singapore Partnership and Cooperation Agreement will further strengthen our relationship, benefit our companies, and promote growth. I look forward to your support for their early ratification.

It was a pleasure catching up with you in March when I visited Luxembourg. I look forward to meeting you again before too long.

I wish you every success in your new appointment.

Yours Sincerely,

Lee Hsien Loong

HE Mr Jean-Claude Juncker

President-elect

European Commission
