MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 26 September 2014

            Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam, who is in New York for the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), met his counterparts from Chile and Jordan on the sidelines.  Minister Shanmugam also attended the Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (IAMM), the Informal ASEAN-US Ministerial Meeting, and the inaugural meeting between ASEAN and the Pacific Alliance (PA).

            Minister Shanmugam and the Foreign Minister of Chile, Heraldo Munoz Valenzuela, reaffirmed the good relations between the two countries.  Minister Munoz updated Minister Shanmugam on recent domestic developments in Chile.  Both Ministers also exchanged views on regional developments, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership, of which both Singapore and Chile are founding members.

            In Minister Shanmugam’s meeting with the Foreign Minister of Jordan, Nasser Judeh, the two Ministers welcomed the good momentum in bilateral relations and exchanged views on the recent developments in the Middle East.

            The IAMM, chaired by Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Wunna Maung Lwin, evaluated developments in the ASEAN Community-building process and exchanged views on regional and global issues.  The Ministers agreed to issue an ASEAN Statement on the rise of violence and brutality committed by terrorist/extremist organisations in Iraq and Syria.

            At the Informal ASEAN-US Ministerial Meeting, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and US Secretary of State John Kerry exchanged views on regional and international issues, including climate change, maritime security, and terrorism.  They reviewed and expressed satisfaction with the state of ASEAN-US cooperation, and looked forward to the 2nd ASEAN-US Summit, which will be held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in November 2014.

            At the inaugural meeting between ASEAN and PA, the PA Ministers invited ASEAN to consider ways to cooperate in line with the PA mandate of building links in trade, investment, services and people-to-people connectivity.  ASEAN and PA Ministers highlighted the similarities and potential for synergy between the two regional organisations, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as trade and tourism.  The Ministers tasked their officials to explore possible areas of interest.
