MFA Spokesman's comments in response to media queries on the adoption of UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2178

In response to media queries on the adoption of UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2178, the MFA Spokesman said:

“Singapore welcomes the unanimous adoption of UNSC Resolution 2178, which aims to prevent and suppress the recruiting, organising, transporting or equipping of foreign terrorist fighters who plan to commit terrorist acts in other States.  Singapore is one of the co-sponsors of this Resolution as we believe that foreign terrorist fighters are a clear threat to international peace and security.  Singapore firmly supports all international and regional cooperation to combat terrorism, including the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-terrorism strategy and all Security Council resolutions related to counter-terrorism.  We stand ready to play our part to counter the threat of global terrorism.

The violent campaigns by terrorist groups against innocent civilians are not confined just to Iraq and Syria.  The latest horrific murder of a French tourist in Algeria is a case in point.  We extend our condolences to all who have suffered or lost loved ones, including the friends and family of French national Hervé Gourdel.”
