MFA Press Statement: 7th Meeting of Singapore Honorary Consuls-General, 22 to 26 April 2015, Singapore

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) will hold its 7th Meeting of Singapore Honorary Consuls-General (HCG) from 22 to 26 April 2015. Organised once every three years, 25 HCGs will be taking part in this year’s meeting. The last meeting took place in July 2012.

Since the first HCG was appointed in 1974, Singapore has appointed 31 HCGs in major cities and countries where we do not have resident diplomatic presence. The HCGs perform representational duties and notarial functions, as well as extend consular assistance to Singaporeans. Many of the HCGs are distinguished and well-respected individuals in their respective societies. Over the years, they have helped to broaden access for Singapore public and private sector representatives in their countries.

In appreciation of the HCGs’ instrumental role in promoting Singapore’s political, commercial and diplomatic interests, President and Mrs Tony Tan Keng Yam will host a tea reception for the HCGs and their spouses on 23 April 2015 at the Istana. This will be followed by a Joint Call on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The following day, the HCGs will have an opportunity to interact with cabinet ministers and the Diplomatic Corps during the President’s Annual Diplomatic Reception at the Istana. In addition, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam will engage the HCGs in a luncheon dialogue on 22 April 2015. The HCGs will also hold meetings with senior MFA officials, and visit the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the National Gallery, the Port of Singapore Authority and the Marina Barrage during their visit.
