Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam, who is visiting Washington, DC, spoke at The Banyan Tree Leadership Forum on “US-Asia relations” on 15 June 2015.  The forum was moderated by former Ambassador to Singapore Stapleton Roy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and attended by some 100 diplomats, policy-makers and academics.  During the session, which touched on global and regional developments and the US’ engagement of Asia, Minister Shanmugam made the following key points:

•        The strategic importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to the US’ engagement of Asia.  The successful conclusion of the TPP will anchor the US’ engagement of the Asia-Pacific.  It would also set a high standards trade template for the future by bringing together 12 countries accounting for 40% of the global economy and one-third of world trade.

•        Enhancing engagement with Asia is in the US’ interest.  The rapid economic growth in Southeast Asia and the impending establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community at the end of 2015 will provide ample opportunities for the US and its companies to further enhance the US’ interests in the region.

•        The importance of all parties adhering to international law to manage the South China Sea disputes and maintain regional stability.  Singapore has consistently supported the fundamental right of freedom of navigation and overflight in the global commons, in accordance with international law.

•        A stable US-China relationship is crucial for regional and international stability.  Both sides should continue to engage each other and build trust to reduce misunderstanding.

•        Singapore and the US share excellent and longstanding bilateral relations.  Both sides will continue to deepen the relationship for the mutual benefit of the wider region.

Separately, Minister Shanmugam presented the Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore) to Singapore’s Honorary Consul-General in Chicago Newton Minow at a reception held in Mr Minow’s honour to recognise his outstanding contributions to Singapore.

In addition, Minister Shanmugam met a group of academics and members of prominent US think tanks to discuss geopolitical developments, particularly in the Middle East.
