MFA Press Statement: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam’s meetings in Washington, DC, 18 and 19 June 2015

            Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam met separately with Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Florida), both candidates for the 2016 US Presidential Election, on 18 June 2015.  He also had meetings with Senator Cory Gardner (R-Colorado), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific and International Cybersecurity Policy as well as Representative Matt Salmon (R-Arizona), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.  The Congressmen affirmed the bipartisan Congressional support for the longstanding Singapore-US relationship.  Minister Shanmugam and the Congressmen exchanged views on how to enhance the US’ engagement of Asia.  They also discussed the importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in anchoring the US’ presence in Asia. 

            Separately, Minister Shanmugam met a bipartisan group of Congressional Chiefs of Staff at a Congressional Study Groups reception hosted by Singapore’s Ambassador to the US Ashok Mirpuri.  
 

            In addition, Minister Shanmugam met separately with key members of the US media as well as Asia specialists from prominent US think tanks to discuss international and regional developments.
