Joint Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Ministry of Home Affairs Press Statement on "Chinpo" case

In January 2014, Singapore received information that a Singapore-registered company “Chinpo” had been implicated in a shipment of arms related materiel bound for the DPRK from Cuba that was interdicted by Panama in July 2013.  Singapore immediately launched a thorough investigation into this case.  On 10 June 2014, the Public Prosecutor filed criminal charges. As this matter is now before the Courts, we are not able to discuss the case further.

Singapore takes a serious view of our obligations to prevent the illicit trafficking of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), their means of delivery and related materials. We will not hesitate to take action against individuals and/or companies that fail to comply with the relevant Singapore legislation that we have put in place to give effect to measures prescribed by United Nations Security Council resolutions.

All media enquiries concerning this case can be directed to the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ Media and Communications Unit at agc-media@agc.gov.sg
