MFA Press Statement: Exchange of Congratulatory Messages to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and The Republic of Korea, 11 August 2015

          Singapore and the Republic of Korea (ROK) established diplomatic relations on 8 August 1975.  To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the occasion,  President Tony Tan Keng Yam exchanged congratulatory messages with ROK President Park Geun-hye. 

 

          In his letter, President Tan noted that, over the past 40 years, Singapore-ROK relations have grown from strength to strength.  President Tan added that Singapore and the ROK enjoy multi-faceted ties which are underpinned by expanding economic cooperation.  Both countries have become each other’s top trading partners and are seeking to deepen cooperation in various sectors such as infocommunication technology, real estate, SMEs and transport.  President expressed confidence that Singapore’s relations with the ROK will continue to strengthen in the years ahead. 

 

          In her letter, President Park noted that, ever since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1975, our two countries have cooperated closely on various fronts: political, economic and cultural.  There has also been unprecedented growth in bilateral trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.  President Park also believed that there are untapped opportunities for cooperation between Singapore’s knowledge-based economy and Korea’s creative economy.
