MFA Press Statement: Public Nominations for the ASEAN People's Award: "Building a Vibrant and Resilient ASEAN Community", 24 August 2015

To celebrate the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is seeking public nominations for Singapore’s National Recipient of the inaugural ASEAN People’s Award.

Under the theme “Building a Vibrant and Resilient ASEAN Community”, this award seeks to recognise Singapore organisations and/or Singapore citizens who have made excellent and inspiring contributions towards ASEAN’s community-building efforts.  The contribution(s) could be in the areas of political, social and cultural development, economic integration, youth and livelihood, education, volunteerism, community development, and the empowerment of peoples.  Nominations could also be made on the basis of achievement in the areas of community and voluntary activities, poverty eradication, rural development, charity work, contribution in the areas of education, research and publication, the arts, as well as entrepreneurship.

The National Recipient of the ASEAN People’s Award will be presented with a one-off cash grant of US$10,000 from the ASEAN Secretariat to encourage efforts to further contribute to the ASEAN Community.  Singapore’s National Recipient will also join nine other National Recipients from the other ASEAN Member States to be honoured at an award presentation ceremony at the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in November 2015.

In line with the Singapore Government’s approach to consult stakeholders on issues of public interest, MFA welcomes nominations from the public.  The nominees and final National Recipient of the Award will be considered and decided by a four-person assessment panel.  The members of the assessment panel are Prof Chan Heng Chee, Ms Jennie Chua, Prof Tommy Koh, and Mr Ong Keng Yong.

Interested members of the public are invited to nominate either organisations or individuals whom they believe meet the aforementioned criteria through the official website of MFA from 0800 hours on 25 August 2015 to 1800 hours on 6 September 2015.
