MFA Press Statement: Singapore’s Representation at the Inauguration Ceremony Marking the Opening of the New Expanded Suez Canal, Egypt, 6 August 2015

            Ambassador Zainul Abidin Rasheed, in his capacity as Special Envoy of the Minister for Foreign Affairs to the Middle East, represented Singapore at the inauguration ceremony marking the opening of the new, expanded Suez Canal in Ismailia, Egypt on 6 August 2015.  The massive national project entailed constructing a 35 kilometre-long channel parallel to the existing Suez Canal, to allow two-way shipping traffic and admit larger ships.  

            Ambassador Zainul also called on His Excellency President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi yesterday to congratulate him on the successful completion of the Suez Canal project and convey an invitation letter from President Tony Tan Keng Yam to President Al Sisi to make a State Visit to Singapore.
