Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is in Malaysia for his introductory visit. He called on Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Razak this morning. Minister Balakrishnan and Prime Minister Najib Razak reaffirmed the excellent relations between Singapore and Malaysia. They welcomed the continued close cooperation between both countries and the good progress that has been made on several bilateral projects, including the KL-Singapore High Speed Rail and Rapid Transit System.
Minister Balakrishnan also met his counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman, who also hosted Minister Balakrishnan to tea. Minister Balakrishnan commended Malaysia on its able Chairmanship of ASEAN and expressed Singapore’s commitment to work closely with Malaysia to achieve a successful ASEAN Summit in November 2015. They exchanged views on latest developments, including the need to cooperate in the fight against terrorism, regional security issues and transboundary haze.
Minister Balakrishnan met other Malaysian Cabinet Ministers including Minister of Defence Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Minister of Transport Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman. Minister Balakrishnan also met Minister of Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin, during which they agreed that it was important to develop closer ties between the younger generation of leaders and youths from both countries. Minister Balakrishnan returns to Singapore on 30 October 2015.
