MFA Press Statement: Visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam to the United Kingdom and The Swiss Confederation, 16 to 25 January 2016


            Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies Tharman Shanmugaratnam will make working visits to London, United Kingdom from 17 to 19 January 2016, and Davos, Switzerland from 19 to 24 January 2016.

            While in London, DPM Tharman will meet Chancellor of the Exchequer and First Secretary of State George Osborne; Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Sajid Javid; Minister of State for Pensions Baroness Ros Altmann; and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney.  He will also visit Entrepreneur First, a successful startup and talent investor from the UK.  In addition, he will speak at Chatham House.

            In Davos,  DPM Tharman will attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting, a platform for leaders in government, industry and academia to engage in discussions and collaborative activities that address global challenges.  He will also speak at WEF sessions relating to the future of jobs and skills; challenges to retirement systems; the international monetary and financial system; ASEAN; and the future for global manufacturing.  DPM Tharman will also have meetings with several industry leaders.

            DPM Tharman will be accompanied by officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
