23 January 2016

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Manpower Sam Tan will visit Norway from 24 to 28 January 2016.  He will visit Tromsø and Svalbard.

In Tromsø, MOS Tan will attend the 10th Arctic Frontiers Conference from 24 to 25 January.  This is an annual international event organised by Norwegian think-tanks and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the discussion of Arctic issues, and is the second time that Singapore is attending the conference.  MOS Tan’s attendance is part of Singapore’s ongoing engagement of the Arctic since becoming an Arctic Council observer in 2013.  On the sidelines of the conference, MOS Tan will meet with Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende, Finnish State Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Paula Lehtomäki, and United States Special Representative for the Arctic Admiral Robert J. Papp Jr.

MOS Tan will thereafter visit Svalbard from 26 to 28 January.  MOS Tan will meet with Governor of Svalbard Mrs Kjerstin Askholt, and visit the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and the Svalbard Satellite Station.  The discussions in Svalbard will focus on possible collaborations on Arctic-related issues.

MOS Tan will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
