Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is on a working visit to Sarawak from 2-3 February 2016.
This morning, Minister Balakrishnan called on Governor of Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud. Minister Balakrishnan and Governor Taib exchanged views on regional developments, and reaffirmed the long standing people-to-people ties between Singapore and Sarawak that date back to before Singapore's independence. They agreed that Singapore and Sarawak should continue to explore new opportunities to work together, particularly in the economic and tourism sectors.
Minister Balakrishnan also called on Chief Minister of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem, and then jointly witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sarawak’s Land Custody and Development Authority and the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise on tourism cooperation. Chief Minister Adenan also hosted Minister Balakrishnan to lunch. Minister Balakrishnan and Chief Minister Adenan welcomed the MOU on tourism cooperation as a significant step forward and a way to enhance the strong ties between Singapore and Sarawak. They expressed hope that the MOU would catalyse new areas of cooperation in the tourism sector. Minister Balakrishnan also discussed regional developments, and our counter-radicalisation efforts.
