MFA Press Statement: Appointment of Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium with concurrent accreditation to the EU, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Kingdom of Netherlands

 

          The Government has appointed Mr Jaya Ratnam as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium.  He will also be concurrently accredited to the European Union, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  Mr Ratnam will assume post on 4 July 2016. 

          Mr Ratnam joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June 1991 and last served as Singapore’s High Commissioner to Negara Brunei Darussalam from June 2012 to March 2016.  Prior to this, he was Director of the International Economics Directorate (January 2009 to January 2011) and Director-General of the Consular Directorate (January 2011 to May 2012).  Mr Ratnam had also served in overseas postings in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and also as Deputy Permanent Representative in the Singapore Permanent Mission in Geneva (September 2005 to December 2008).

         Mr Ratnam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the National University of Singapore in 1991 and Master in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, USA in 2000.

         He was awarded the Public Administration Award (Silver) by the Singapore Government in 2012.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Mr Jaya Ratnam was Singapore’s High Commissioner in Negara Brunei Darussalam from June 2012 to March 2016.

Born in Singapore on 28 June 1966, Mr Ratnam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the National University of Singapore in 1991 and Master in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, USA in 2000.

Mr Ratnam joined the Singapore Foreign Service in June 1991.  In the Ministry’s Headquarters, Mr Ratnam had covered several portfolios including Europe, Southeast Asia and International Organisations.  He was Director of the International Economics Directorate from January 2009 to January 2011 and Director-General of the Consular Directorate from January 2011 to May 2012.

Mr Ratnam had served in Kuala Lumpur (March 1994 to September 1997) and Jakarta (January 2002 to August 2005).  He also served as Deputy Permanent Representative in the Singapore Permanent Mission in Geneva from September 2005 to December 2008.

Mr Ratnam was awarded the Public Administration Award (Silver) by the Singapore Government in 2012.
