Letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom The Rt Hon Theresa May

13 July 2016

Dear Prime Minister,

On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I would like to congratulate you on your appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. I am confident that you will provide the strong leadership that the United Kingdom will need to navigate the challenges ahead, and steer the country towards continued prosperity.

Singapore is a longstanding partner and friend of the United Kingdom.  We share deep historical ties and common interests in many areas.  You would already be familiar with the strong security cooperation between the Home Office and our Ministry of Home Affairs.  In business, Singapore companies have substantial long-term investments all over the United Kingdom from transport to waste-to-energy plants, and will continue to seek opportunities that provide shared prosperity for both our peoples.  As part of our own industrial strategy, we have also welcomed the expansion of major British corporations into the growing Asian market through Singapore.

Our countries also share strong defence relations through the Five Power Defence Arrangements, and burgeoning cooperation in science and innovation.  All these relationships are underpinned by the strong people-to-people ties and the historical and cultural links we share.  I am sure that these longstanding links will continue to flourish under your leadership.

I look forward to meeting you soon to discuss how we can further strengthen the relations between our two countries.

Yours sincerely,

LEE HSIEN LOONG

The Rt Honourable Theresa May MP

Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
