Letter from President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam to Uzbek Acting President Mr Nigmatilla Yuldashev

3 September 2016

His Excellency Nigmatilla Yuldashev

Acting President

Republic of Uzbekistan

Your Excellency,

It is with great sadness that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency Islam Karimov, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 2 September 2016.

Uzbekistan has lost a leader who led the country in its development and progress for the past twenty-five years since its independence.  President Karimov also contributed significantly to enhancing the bilateral relations between Singapore and Uzbekistan.  He made a successful State Visit to Singapore in January 2007 which led to the opening of the Uzbekistan Embassy in Singapore, and the conclusion of several agreements that have strengthened the bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Uzbekistan in economic and other fields.

On behalf of the people of Singapore I convey our deepest condolences to the family of President Karimov, and to the Government and people of Uzbekistan.

Yours sincerely,

TONY TAN KENG YAM
