MFA Press Statement: Visit by Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman to Margarita Island, Venezuela for the XVII Non-Aligned Movement Summit, 17 to 18 September 2016

        Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Maliki Osman visited the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela from 17 to 18 September 2016 to attend the XVII Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit of Heads of State and Government, as Special Envoy of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

 

          Dr Maliki delivered Singapore’s National Statement on 18 September 2016, on the theme of the XVII NAM Summit “Peace, Sovereignty and Solidarity for Development”.  Dr Maliki emphasised the importance of a rules-based multilateral order, and the need for solidarity amongst NAM Member States to preserve NAM’s international relevance.  Dr Maliki also highlighted that NAM Member States should take concrete measures to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.  Noting that peace and stability are necessary conditions for development, Dr Maliki stressed that Member States must continue to work together to tackle transnational challenges such as terrorism and cybercrime, which threaten the security and stability of the international system.
