                Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Manpower Mr Sam Tan attended the 6th International Meeting of Representatives of Arctic Council Member States, Observer States and Foreign Scientific Community from 29 August to 2 September 2016 in Russia, held on board the icebreaker “50 Years of Victory” travelling from Anadyr to Pevek along the Northern Sea Route.

                The meeting, entitled “Northern Sea Route: Towards Strategic Stability and Equal Partnership in the Arctic”, was chaired by Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev and attended by official representatives, technical experts and academics from the Arctic Council member states and observer states.

                During the discussions, MOS Tan touched on Singapore’s participation in the Arctic Council as an observer state.  This included our engagement of various Arctic Council Working Groups and Task Forces, where we share our experience in emergency preparedness and response. MOS Tan also highlighted Singapore’s efforts to build up research capabilities that could contribute to the advancement of technical knowledge for operating vessels and systems safely in the Arctic.

               MOS Tan also met Secretary Patrushev and Special Representative of the Russian President on International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov.  During the meeting, MOS Tan reaffirmed the warm relations between Singapore and Russia, and discussed possibilities for further cooperation.
