Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan met Argentine Minister of the Treasury Nicolas Dujovne and Argentine Minister of Modernisation Andres Horacio Ibarra in Buenos Aires on 7 April 2017. Minister Balakrishnan and Minister Dujovne agreed to work together to explore greater cooperation between Singapore and Argentina in trade and investment. Minister Ibarra expressed interest in Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative and discussed how both sides could cooperate in using technology and innovation to improve the quality of living.
At the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Susana Malcorra, Minister Balakrishnan met the Mercosur Foreign Ministers – Aloysio Nunes Ferreira of Brazil, Eladio Loizaga of Paraguay, and Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay, who were in Buenos Aires to attend the first Mercosur-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting. The Ministers exchanged views on regional integration efforts and developments, and expressed support for deeper engagement between Singapore, Mercosur, and ASEAN.
Minister Balakrishnan also had a separate bilateral meeting with Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Aloysio Nunes Ferreira. This was their first meeting since Minister Nunes’ appointment as Foreign Minister. The Ministers reaffirmed the warm and long-standing friendship between Singapore and Brazil, and welcomed the upcoming 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Singapore in November 2017. They discussed opportunities to further strengthen trade and investment, and people-to-people linkages.
