Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan made a working visit to Batam in Riau Islands (KEPRI) province on 25 April 2017.
Minister Balakrishnan was hosted to lunch by the Governor of KEPRI province Nurdin Basirun. They reaffirmed the deep and multi-faceted relationship between Singapore and KEPRI. They discussed ways to expand cooperation between the two sides, which includes Singapore’s plan to upgrade its Consulate in Batam to a Consulate-General. This would help to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as tourism, investments and the digital economy.
Minister Balakrishnan also met Batam Mayor Muhammad Rudi, during which they discussed economic cooperation between Singapore and Batam, including exploring investment opportunities in Batam. They emphasised the importance of a consistent and predictable business and regulatory environment.
Minister Balakrishnan also visited projects by Singapore companies in Batam, including Batamindo Industrial Park, before departing for Singapore.
