Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), Senator Christopher Coons (D-Delaware) and a Congressional delegation led by Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Congressman Mac Thornberry called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on 3 June 2017. The Congressional delegation comprises Members of the HASC: Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-Alabama), Congressman Austin Scott (R-Georgia), Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin), Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam), Congressman Seth Moulton (D-Massachusetts), Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy (D-Florida), and Congressman Salud Carbajal (D-California).
During the call, both sides affirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations between Singapore and the US, which includes strong and longstanding economic, defence, security, and people-to-people ties. PM Lee and the Members of Congress also exchanged views on regional and international developments, and PM Lee welcomed the commitment expressed by the Members’ of Congress for the US’ sustained engagement of the Asia-Pacific region.
The Members of Congress are in Singapore to attend the 2017 Shangri-La Dialogue.
Before the call on PM Lee, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan also hosted the Members of Congress to lunch. The Members of Congress also met Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs and Second Minister for Manpower Josephine Teo, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for National Development Desmond Lee. They will also be meeting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Second Minister for Defence Ong Ye Kung.
